Honoring the Military in Granville


There are many opportunities to honor those that served in the military in Granville.  Here are some that you can attend this year.  Keep checking back for updated events:

memorialPlease join the Town of Butner for the opportunity to pay tribute and remember our past US Military Service men and women with a Wreath Laying Ceremony.  The event will take place at the Gazebo Park, Town of Butner, on Monday, May 29th beginning at 10:00 AM.  The Ceremony includes keynote speaker Tom Lane, who was the first elected Mayor of Butner (2007-2015).  Also participating are area pastors Reverend Buddy Ritter, Reverend David Richardson; the South Granville Jr. ROTC; and music by the South Granville High School Band.  Winners of the Middle School Essay Contest will present their writings and military vehicles will be on display.  The address for Gazebo Park is 416, Central Avenue, Butner, NC.  In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at Soldiers Memorial Sports Arena.  For information, log onto http://www.butnernc.org.


vet memorialThe Ernest F. Hart American Legion Post 90 will host a Memorial Day Service at the Granville County Veteran Memorial at City Hall on Monday, May 29th. Ceremony begins at 11 am.  Keynote speaker will be Dr. Doug Vaughan, Granville County Veterans' Service Officer.  In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to the American Legion building at 914 Williamsboro Street in Oxford.


The Granville County Library System will be hosting "Vietnam POW 1967-1973" on May 31st from 4 pm to 5 pm at the Richard H. Thornton Library in downtown Oxford.  The event will feature Brigadier Gerneral Norman Gaddie that will  speak about his service for his country and hist time as a Vietnam POW.  For more information, contact the library at (919) 693-1121.

The Town of Butner will be celebrating their 75th Anniversary of  Camp Butner  on Friday, September 22nd and Saturday, September 23rd .  Events will include an USO Dinner and Show, a ceremony honoring Camp Butner, Parade on Central Avenue,  Reenactment with German and American military camps Exhibits & Historical Tour.
