Oxford Kicks Off 200th Celebration in January
Oxford officially became incorporated in 1816, although the city was founded in the Eighteenth Century. In 1761 Samuel Benton built a plantation home and called it Oxford. The state legislature ordered the area around his plantation to be the seat of Granville County.
In 2016 the City of Oxford will celebrate the 200th Anniversary of its incorporation. To kick off the celebration, Oxford will have a Mural Dedication on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 2:00 pm. This event will take place at the Oxford City Hall lobby located on 300 Williamsboro Street in downtown Oxford. The mural is entitled "Oxford & the World" and was created & donated by Oxford Native, Nick Bragg. All citizens are welcome to attend this free event.
