Celebrating History in Granville

During the year there will be several presentations throughout Granville that will celebrate the rich history of our community:

The Granville County Library System will sponsor several programs related to Women History Month in March:

Christine Darden:  Retired NASA Researcher and Manager will be at Thornton Library in Oxford on April 11th at 5:30 pm.  Darden  was one of the inspirations for the book Hidden Figures.  She became one of the first female areospace engineers.  For more information on the program, CLICK HERE.

 will be have an art exhibit in the Richard H. Thornton Library located in downtown Oxford from March 1st to March 31st in honor of Women's History Month. For more information on the Exhibit, CLICK HERE.

rev“The Life of Reverend Martin Van Buren Marable of Granville County, NC”

Martin Van Buren Marable was born a slave on the Cedar Lawn Plantation in Granville County.  The first in his family to go to college, he entered the ministry early in life, was active in civic organizations and was a highly respected leader in the Statesville community of western North Carolina.

Rev. Marable’s life and times will be discussed in an effort to bring this Granville County native into the awareness of our present-day community.

“Cedar Lawn Plantation from Two Perspectives”
Presenter:  Ms. Sallyann Marable Hobson

The Cedar Lawn Plantation in Granville County was a sprawling 1090 acre farm owned by Edward T. Marable.  Black and white members of the Marable family and members of the Butler family created a life on this land.  Ms. Sallyann Hobson will share the story of her slave ancestors and the history of Confederate soldier, Edward Gale Butler.  This presentation gives us a look at life on this plantation from two very different experiences.

Retired professional graphic artist, Ms. Sallyann Hobson will discuss the basic visual principles of digital slide presentation production.  Project organization and planning, some color theory, use of illustrative artwork and production tools will be covered in this hour long presentation.
